June Meeting 2017

Vice President Katie Reid welcomed everyone to the meeting, which began with Jerusalem.




The meeting began with the speaker, Karen Doyle a cancer research nurse.  Using soft toys to describe good cells and bad cells, Karen’s talk was quite uplifting, as she emphasised that there was exciting progress being made in the world of research.  As every person is unique, cancers are all different.

The five most important factors to consider to avoid cancer are 1) not smoking 2) healthy diet 3) avoid body fat 4) excess alcohol 5) use sun cream 6) do exercise.

After a break for refreshments the meeting continued.

Matters Arising:

                                 i.            The Mock Auction at the May meeting raised over £80 for our funds.
                               ii.            Pam Eves will act as coordinator for the Annual Creative Activities Competition.
                             iii.            Members were asked if anyone would like to act as delegate to the A.C.M at Malvern.  Lesley Smith (Treasurer) will be our delegate.
                             iv.            There are two County Bursaries available for Denman College.  Names will be put in a draw.
                               v.            2017 A.G.M in Liverpool – Katie Reid was the delegate for our link.  She reported that the resolution re Micro Plastics in the oceans was passed by 98.9% of the votes.  The resolution to combat loneliness was passed by 69.3% of the votes.  
                             vi.            A  Member’s only website is being launched today.
                           vii.            The new National Chairman is Lin Stubbings.

5.       ACM Tuesday 17 Oct 10.30 Malvern. Speakers, Prue Leith (Businesswoman and TV Presenter and Ben Cooper (Flog It TV Presenter).
6.       WFWI Lunch with Giles Brandreth – Mon 11 Sept 12 for 12.45 - members £38 non-members, £40.  Venue Chateau Impney.
7.       2018 NFWI Diary now for sale – £4.60
8.       Stop Press: The County office will close in August and 1st – 9th July is Climate change action week.
9.       Far Forest Show 12/13August All WI’s were encouraged to enter an exhibit entitled Mad Hatters Tea Party, comprising needlecraft, cooking, sugarcraft, floral max size 24”x24”.  Appearance only would be judged.  Far Forest would like some competition.

11.   Tea/croquet 24/06/17 Bewdley WI 4-6pm Flyer to be sent out.
12.   Rock WI a strawberry tea on Saturday 22 July at 3.00pm at the home of Kath Thornton, 'Sherwood', Rock (next door but one to the Rock Cross Inn coming from the Village Hall), Cost £5 including strawberries and cream, a slice of cake and a cup of tea or coffee.  numbers to Barbara Jones Secretary, Rock W

 Trip to Theatre to see Whistle Down the Wind – Sat 5th August 2.30pm
 Garden Party at Stourport Cricket Club on Tuesday 8 August 12 for 12.30 in aid of Denman Bursary.  Members asked to provide a sweet or savoury item of food.  Katie will make tickets.  £6.00 per ticket.  Guests welcome.

Any Other Business

1.       Shirley Hunt reported that several members had attended the Group Meeting, hosted by Mitton WI.  The supper and hospitality provided by the Mitton ladies was excellent – everyone enjoyed the evening.

2.       Leslie and Katie attended the Forest Group, President and Secretaries meeting.  The next time AKWI is to host a group meeting will be in Autumn 2020.

3.       Next Month, July, we shall have a sales table for books.  Katie Reynolds and Lyn Edwards to man the table.

4.       AKVH Film Club – Next film, ‘What we did on our holidays’ Friday 16th June 7.30pm £5.  Faye Gillmore and Katie Reid will be on the door and Ann Bailey will be behind the bar.

Di Parkes was thanked for providing a lovely plant for the top table which went into the raffle.









Competition: Something New from Something Old -  There were several very imaginative entries.  1st Margaret Cook with a button box from a margarine tub, 2nd Katie Reid with a tie made into a decorative neckpiece.  3rd Carla Walters with a metal work cat rescued from a skip and restored.

The raffle was drawn – Paula Wood appealed for more prizes.
