Our summer trip was at the Longstock Park Water Gardens in Hampshire. We all got on-board our lovely coach and set off on a great day out. The weather looked like it was going to be just right (maybe the odd spot or two of rain on the way) but we were in the coach so we were not getting wet!
We stopped off for a comfort break at the Little Chef where we were served rather quickly, then were on our way again travelling through the beautiful town of Marlborough following on to the garrison town of Tidworth where one of our members used to live.
We arrived at out first port of call and that was the Mayfly on the River Test.
They had kindly set aside a section of the pub for us all to sit in (our reputation proceeds us!!!). All ordered and lovely lunch which was absolutely beautiful and maybe the odd tipple or two!. The staff were so good to us and I would recommend it to anyone. On our way out we all stood on the bridge for a photo.
Which was a good ploy as it got everyone together to get back on the coach!
So back on the road again and thank goodness the coach was only small as the roads were rather narrow. After navigating past lorries and tractors we eventually got to Leckford Estate. Where Waitrose grow most of then produce they sell.
We did drive past the garden, they were very hard to spot being so well hidden. So we stopped a local farmer to ask for directions!
They were very helpful and the fact that the chap who was letting us in had just put a sign out for us!
Longstock is a part of the Leckford Estate which is fully Owned by Waitrose. The garden is situated in the heart of Hampshire.
The Garden was created by John Spedon Lewis in the 1940's as a place to work and reflect. And what a place to do it.
Unfortunately the rain came a little early so we decided to go to the Garden centre in the estate and we had a lovely spread with cakes and refreshments. Then we had time to have a look around the walled garden and shop before the journey home.
Another fantastic trip out. A fabulous day was had by all.
Remember please pop along to Areley Kings W.I On our next meeting which is Monday 14th Sept 2015 in the Village Hall at 7.30pm. We would love to see you there.
